When a metric becomes a goal, it ceases to be a good metric.
Stars shouldn’t be a metric you optimize for - no amount of GitHub Stars are worth a single paying user. Regardless, if your business model is based around selling hosting for your dev tool, stars can help establish legitimacy and social proof that you can then convert to sales.
Introduction
I’m the creator of Open Interface which is an application that wizards over your computer using LLMs (much like Claude’s Computer Use but it preceded it by almost a year). It is open sourced, supports many multimodal LLMs such as GPT-4o, Llama, etc. It’s also available for Mac, Windows, and Linux and runs natively instead of in a VM.
How We Got to a Thousand Stars
Marketing.
There are a few free marketing channels that I know of accessible to indie hackers: Reddit, Indie Hackers itself, Product Hunt, Twitter, and HackerNews. For the bulk of my projects Reddit is what has generally brought me the most eyes and adoption, and it was no different for Open Interface.
There are other exhaustive lists you can search for on IH but some of the popular and effective subreddits are:
- /r/SideProject,
- /r/opensource,
- /r/coolgithubprojects,
- /r/somethingimade,
- /r/programming,
- /r/selfhosted
Besides these you can dive into some specific communities that only you and your business can know.
My biggest marketing push, for example, came from a lackluster post on /r/OpenAI that blew up with 143K views and almost 500 shares. That single post fueled my project’s growth for many months with its SEO as well as the network effects of Github.
You can push for other marketing strategies such as Youtube videos, blog posts, and collaborations with other dev tools depending on your evaluation of expected returns. Press coverage has also worked well for me in the past but I was unable to materialize it for Open Interface.
How to Structure a High Quality Repository
Before its marketing, we had to make sure that the quality of the repository merited attention. Below are a few steps you can take to improve the quality of your repository

Have an inviting README:
How? Do the things you would generally do to write a compelling document on the internet - add a narrative, include illustrations, a demo, some statistics.
A lot of successful READMEs go the route of being a very technical and all inclusive documentation of the project. I personally didn’t think it would have lended well to this project or reflect my voice so I kept it a light and accessible read.
Here are a few things you should consider adding to your READMEs to make them more convincing:
- IIllustrations
I personally like the aesthetic of ASCII art. If it speaks to you as well consider adding ASCII system diagrams to your README. More than a few people have asked about mine.

Github README Badges
This one’s a personal choice and many might consider it distracting for the technical nature of a Github README, but I believe badges give the document a pop of color and some breathing space between walls of texts.

Demo
There are more than a few fancy screen recorders out there for MacOS (Screen Studio is one I saw recently on IH), but I stuck to a simple screen recording (⌘Cmd + ⇧Shift + 5) that I edited and converted to a GIF using moviepy. In general I prefer GIFs to embedded videos, but it can be very contextual.It is important to make sure your demo conveys its point across swiftly and memorably because right now there is a lot of activity in the dev tool space that can drown out your business.
- Statistics
I embedded a star count graph from star-history.com towards the end of my README. I believe besides the social proof it also serves a bonus feature of reminding viewers to bookmark the repo with a star.
- Upkeep
More than half of the stars came many months after my last reddit post. I believe it’s because I had upkept the repository with newer LLMs, features, and functionality fixes. Regular maintenance and releases will help establish user trust in the project’s longevity.
- Welcome Open Source Contributions
Make it easy for others to contribute to your repository by documenting your code well and adding “Help Wanted” and “Good First Issue” tags to your Issues.
I have personally found the quality of contributions not always up to the standards of the rest of the codebase. Nevertheless, use these contributions as a starting point to foster a larger sense of investment from other users and contributors.
Wrapping Up
Use your GitHub Stars as a form of currency to buy things that will help you monetize - whether it is legitimacy to sell hosting, or entry into pitch competitions, or cross marketing your other products. I myself am trying to figure it out what works best for me.

Find an idea 💡
You don't have to have an original idea; you can take something already existing and open-source it (of course, make it good).
Why? Because once you have open-sourced it, you turn to a new audience that was never served before - Developers and companies that want to self-host your product (primarily because of privacy.)
I prefer to find big markets. For example, Postiz is a social media scheduling tool. It's one of the most saturated markets, meaning many people and underserved audiences are looking for it.
You also get tremendous credibility by showing all your code and get more credibility by getting stars.
Market it 🏪
Every product needs marketing; you can imagine from this post that I have some sense of it (Squid game picture + title); attracting more people is essential to get the initial visibility.
Open source gets some superpowers because it allows you to promote it in channels usually unavailable in typical startups.
You can find a lot of content about it on my website Gitroom.
In short:
- Post your repository every time you have a new version on Reddit /r/selfhosted
- If you have an AI startup, post it on /r/LocalLLaMA
- Post it in Lemmy's self-hosted community
- Post it on DEV.to / Hackernoon / Medium / Hashnode every week
- Post it on Hackernews: "Show HN: product name"
- Post it on LinkedIn / X as much as you can. Use Postiz for that 😉
If you do it often, you might be trending on GitHub, increasing your visibility by 10x.
Then, use your audience to post it on Product Hunt and get upvotes from the community members. Postiz finished 1st of the day/week/month.
Collect feedback 💭
Using Discord and GitHub issues, I am collecting tons of feedback on what to implement and what not.
With over 800k downloads from Docker, tons of people are always playing with it and giving feedback.
When you implement feedback, people trust you more, and you learn faster about your product.

Stop looking for excuses. Just write some code - the nice thing about open-source is that you don't even have to start by making the main website - just build the open-source!

At the end of the article i will give most valuable strategy: how to get more followers on X/Twitter.
When I was preparing this material, I encountered the fact that good tools for X/Twitter promotion seemed to have died or become very outdated.
At the very end, I’ll propose a scheme that, in my opinion, is the most effective in 2024 for growing X/Twitter to 10k followers. Fist i must say it’s not easy. X/Twitter has a rather easy algorithm to rank in once your posts have been deemed relative to the topic, however just like running a website each account has their own authority levels.

Content still is king showcase your expertise, but the most effective way to promote on X/Twitter is to collect reactions to your posts. The more engagement, the faster the growth. Repeat this like a mantra.

- upvote.club — A fresh tool that works like this: you perform task, like, share, repost, follow, get points, and then spend these points to create your own tasks. Creators claim that audience quality is top priority, and bots are ruthlessly filtered out. Works very well, with really a lot of quality and live audience. Very cheap points and free task creation. For modest money, you’ll get maximum engagement on your posts.
- twiends — An even simpler principle: you add your X/Twitter account, other people see it on the network, subscribe to you, and you subscribe to them. Want more account views? Pay, starting from $15 per week for 700 views. Generally a decent tool that really works, but quite expensive. Managed to get +20 subscribers in a week.
- socialplug — Essentially an ordinary store where you can buy X/Twitter followers or engagement for posts, likes, shares, reposts. Quality mostly resembles bots, but sometimes it gives an effect. Generally, I don’t really recommend buying followers because it doesn’t really give anything.
- megafone.network — Principle similar to upvote.club, you add your post, people come and do the action you requested: like, comment, repost. But the price is higher, account setup costs money + each action. Around $5 per action. I spent $10 +40$ and got likes from actually quality guys — that was pleasing. But globally, I didn’t see a significant effect.
- owlead — Essentially a mass follower tool via Chrome extension. Very simple principle: you install the extension, choose your audience, it goes and likes and follows them, they follow you back. Working scheme? Yes, it works. Is it worth using? So-so, you choose.
- Like4Like — Ooooold tool, an old site that’s somewhat very inconvenient. Same principle as upvote.club — like for like. I tested it, but I don’t like the audience here, maximally similar to bots, but there’s a lot of them. Up to you whether you want such followers in your account.
- X/Twitter Blue Checkmark — Obviously why it was created. Yes, so you pay for it, but it also gives a super bonus. Your posts are shown X2 times more often, and yes, you collect more engagement.
Content Creation for X/Twitter
Ofcource better make content manully, you can write content manually. But since it’s 2024, let’s optimize this process a bit and add AI to your hands.
- Answerim — Helps answer relevant high quality tweets using AI. Works like this: add your product, brand, or site. The system does a scoring of your product using AI. You set a theme through keywords, the system finds relevant tweets or topics worth commenting on. There’s an auto-commenting button that allows automatic AI commenting on posts and threads. Works very cool. But I recommend monitoring responses to understand which AI wrote good ones and which bad ones to correct them.
- Twitter Hunter — A cool tool that finds the most popular tweets on your needed theme. Does a rewrite through AI and publishes under your name, really works. But I recommend mixing with real posts and, for example, Answerim, so it doesn’t look like your account is run by AI alone.
- typefully — Essentially a complete content management system for X/Twitter. You can create posts, edit them with AI of course. Create threads, schedule posts, scheduling system. All this reasonably costs money, from $15 per month. Can you do this in Google Docs? Of course, but it’s not sexy. And Typefully is sexy.
- ViralExamples — an extreeemely useful newsletter about what content to write to go viral. I really highly recommend it, it’s a must-have. There are many tools that collect tweets and select relevant by topics.
X/Twitter Advertising — post promotion
The main problem with buying X/Twitter ads today is still bots. Many who write about X/Twitter advertising even now complain about the dominance of bots that loose budgets.
- X Advertising Portal — The official X/Twitter advertising cabinet what helps you find a target audience. After Elon bought it, many things changed. It became easier to set up ads, new formats appeared. The main advantage is you can start with $50 per day, no need to immediately invest thousands. Targeting here is weaker than Facebook, but the audience is more solvent.
- Quick Promote — This is just a button in X/Twitter interface. The simplest way to promote a tweet. Directly from the interface, you can choose a post and throw a budget at it. No complex settings, everything is simple and fast. Ideal for tests.
- Upvote.club – works similar to X/Twitter advertising. You need to create a tweet and order the reactions you want for it. The difference is that advertising will show your tweet where needed and people will give reactions and your audience will grow, while here your tweet will be liked, followed etc. and your audience will grow from that.
Twitter Analytics
- Twitter Graph — A GitHub library that does an incredible thing: you throw in any account and get and it shows you variety of people: old friends, work colleagues, funny accounts, etc. Gradually, my timeline has become this messy mix that makes X/Twitter so enjoyable.
- TwitterAnalytics — Built-in X/Twitter analytics, shows basic metrics: reach, engagement, subscriber growth. Free and good for start, but functionality is limited. But you blue checkmark
- SocialBlade — Top service for analytics, shows growth dynamics, compares with competitors, gives insights on the best posting time. Costs from $30 per month, but really helps understand what works and what doesn’t.
- Followerwonk — Cool thing for subscriber analysis. Shows demographics, interests, when they are most active. Helps understand your audience and adjust content for them.
- Tweet Binder — cool tool for analyzing hashtags and trends. You can track any hashtag, see who writes about it the most, what’s the reach, and when activity peaks. Helps understand which hashtags actually work and which are just noise.
- Fedica — visualizes your followers’ geography on a map. Seems simple, but really helps understand where your main audience is and when it’s better to post content. It can also analyze the best posting time based on your followers’ time zones.
- Twitonomy — provides super detailed analytics for your tweets. Shows which words get more engagement, who your most active followers are, how often you use links/images and how this affects reach. Has a free plan, but with limitations.
- Trendsmap — realtime analytics of trends by geolocation. You can see what people are talking about in different cities and countries right now. Perfect for news accounts or if you want to always stay on trend. Paid (from $25 per month), but saves tons of time on searching for current topics.
- BlackMagic.so — a cool AI that analyzes your account and suggests what to write to get maximum reach. It can also find trends in your topic area. Expensive (from $50 per month) but really works.

- TweetGPT — integrates directly into X/Twitter’s interface, helps generate post ideas and even write them. Runs on GPT-4, so the content quality is decent. Has a free plan, but with limitations.

Most Effective Grow X/Twitter Strategy in 2024
I spent 4 weeks talking with influencer marketing agencies, and 9 out of 10 told me that they support each post their influencers publish with likes, comments, reposts, save etc. Within the first hour. They go all-in on the post as an agency. They call it golden hour strategy.
Also, I found a tweet by Natia Kurdadze where she mentions that X Blue gives a 2x boost to posts on an account, while: Likes give a 30x boost, Comments give a 50x boost, Reposts give a 20x boost, Visual content gives a 2x boost

TL;DR launched Postiz open-source on September 1, and it is making $2,000 per month already 💪🏻
At the beginning of 2024, I started to work on a social media scheduling tool called Postiz. I have 10 years of experience as an SWE / Dev team leader, so programming was a breeze.
Social scheduling marketing has existed for almost 20 years. Hootsuite, the leading, was founded in 2008. There are more than 1000 competitors at the moment in this marketing.
Early days
I am pretty strong at marketing. As their marketing person, I worked for an open-source company called Novu and got them to 30k stars in two years.
However, I decided not to start with the open-source path; I focused mainly on SEO.
So, I hired a freelancer off UpWork to reach news websites, buy backlinks, and write many articles.
But it was useless. When your website has a very low Domain Authority, ranking even for easy keywords is hard. The competition is fierce, and after 4 months of spending around 3k per month, I decided to do what I know and go open-source.
Back to open-source
I open-sourced my app and a very fancy README.md file and launched it on Reddit. It was a huge success.
When I realized how strong it is, I launched on Reddit every month with updates of what is new in Postiz and got the same results repeatedly!
- Discord blew up to 1115 members (as of now)
- Docker was downloaded 584K times!
- Reached 15k stars
- Almost 4k registrations to the cloud.
- And 2k in MRR (monthly recurring revenue)
My main channels were dev.to, Reddit, Indiehackers.com, Hackernoon and Lemmy.
Successful Product Hunt launch
With the audience I collected, I launched a Product hunt.
I have launched many products, and it's never easy.
I used a few tactics that I usually do:
- Created one X / LinkedIn post about Product Hunt and told people to interact with it.
- Put Product Hunt on the README.md
- Asked people to vote over the newsletter
- I asked people to vote on Discord.
And it was one of the best Product Hunt I have ever had.
Postiz finished 1st of the day / week / month.
Work closely with open-source contributors
